Body relatively elongate and compressed. Head long, 41〜42% of SL. Preopercle rounded with serrae at the angle; posterior part of opercle with 3 flat spines. Pelvic fin shorter than pectoral fin and inserted below ventral end of pectoral base. Dorsal spines shorter than the longest soft dorsal fin ray. Bases of soft portions of dorsal and anal fins covered with scales. Caudal fin rounded. Body and fins pale reddish brown with reddish brown spots; posterior edges of dorsal, anal and caudal fins dark brown.
Distribution:
From Florida, Bermuda to Brazil.
Remarks:
This species is separable from other Atlantic groupers by having 9 dorsal spines, rounded caudal fin and many reddish brown spots on the body. (Matsuura)
