(Family): Mouth oblique, lower jaw protruding from the upper. Scutes on ventral midline. No lateral line. No spine in fins. Pectoral fin abdominal. Pelvic fin about equidistant between pectoral fin base and anal fin origin. (Genus): Last dorsal ray elongated filamentously. Anal fin origin behind dorsal fin origin. (Species): Body low, its depth 27.9〜31.1% of body length. Lower limb gill raker of 1st arch 30〜37 (Rivas, 1972).
Distribution:
Gulf of Maine to southern Brazil.
Remarks:
Another species in this genus O. captivai known only from Colombia has 25〜28 lower limb gill rakers. Genus Dorosoma also has filamentous last dorsal ray, but this genus has anal fin origin anterior to dorsal fin origin. (Shimizu)
