(Family): Mouth oblique, lower jaw protruding from the upper. Scutes on ventral midline. No lateral line. No spine in fins. Pectoral fin abdominal. Pelvic fin about equidistant between pectroal fin base and anal fin origin. (Genus): Scutes on whole length of ventral midline. No median notch on upper jaw. Pelvic fin rays 8. Two fleshy outgrowths on hind border of gill opening, toothed hypomaxilla present (Fig.). (Species): Tooth plate on floor of mouth is shown in figure.
Distribution:
New Jersey to Brazil, in coastal water.
Remarks:
Three species in the genus are distinguishable by their shape of tooth plates (Fig.). (Shimizu)
