(Family): Mouth oblique, lower jaw protruding from the upper. Scutes on ventral midline. No lateral line. No spine in fins. Pectoral fin abdominal. Pelvic fin about equidistant between pectoral fin base and anal fin origin. (Genus): Scutes on whole length of ventral midline. No median notch on upper jaw. Ventral fin rays 9. Two fleshy outgrowths on hind border of gill opening, no hypomaxilla (see explanation of H. jaguana). Last dorsal ray not elongated. (Species): Gill rakers on lower limb strongly curled when viewed from above (Fig.).
Distribution:
Off Florida to Uruguay.
Remarks:
Another species in this genus S. aurita is distinguishable by its shape of gill rakers on lower limb (Fig.). S. braziliensis is abundant in southern waters of Brazil to Uruguay and S. aurita is abundant in northern waters. (Shimizu)
