(Family): Mouth oblique, lower jaw protruding from the upper. Scutes on ventral midline. No lateral line. No spine in fins. Pectoral fin abdominal. Pelvic fin about equidistant between pectoral fin base and anal fin origin. (Genus): Dorsal fin origin slightly behind anal fin origin. A few canine-like teeth on both jaw tips. Small pointed teeth on whole length of lower margin of maxilla. Monotypic genus.

From Caribbean Sea to Brazil.
Remarks:
C. bleekerianus is the only species having dorsal fin origin slightly behind anal fin origin in the Clupeidae distributed in this area. (Shimizu)
