特 徴
（科）：口は斜位で，下顎は上顎より突出する。腹中線に稜鱗をもつ。側線はない。鰭に棘がない。胸鰭は腹位。腹鰭は胸鰭基底と臀鰭起部とのほぼ中間に位置する。（属）：背鰭起部は臀鰭起部のわずか後方。両顎先端には数本の犬歯がある。主上顎骨の下縁全部に小さく鋭い歯がある。1属1種。
分 布：
カリブ海からブラジル。
備 考：
本海域に分布するニシン科魚類の中では本種のみ背鰭起部が臀鰭起部のわずか後方である。 （清水）
Distinctive characters
(Family)： Mouth oblique, lower jaw protruding from the upper. Scutes on ventral midline. No lateral line. No spine in fins. Pectoral fin abdominal. Pelvic fin about equidistant between pectoral fin base and anal fin origin. (Genus)： Dorsal fin origin slightly behind anal fin origin. A few canine-like teeth on both jaw tips. Small pointed teeth on whole length of lower margin of maxilla. Monotypic genus.
Distribution：
From Caribbean Sea to Brazil.
Remarks：
C. bleekerianus is the only species having dorsal fin origin slightly behind anal fin origin in the Clupeidae distributed in this area. (Shimizu)
