A short spine on each dorsal fin and only a tip projecting beyond skin. Rear margin of pectoral reaching very nearly to first dorsal spine. Definite subterminal notch on upper caudal lobe and lower caudal lobe well produced. Teeth dissimilar on jaws; upper jaw teeth lanceolate, and those on midway along either side of jaw noticeably longer than those toward center and corner of mouth; lower jaw teeth knife-shaped, and somewhat oblique. Dermal denticles wide and ending posteriorly in 3 points; outer surface with weak transverse ridges in addition to the 3 longitudinal ridges (Fig.).
Distribution:
Atlantic Ocean, Indian Ocean, and near Japan.
Remarks:
The present species is distinctive in its shape of caudal fin and dermal denticles among 4 known species in the genus. (Uyeno and Sasaki)
