A well developed spine on each dorsal fin; first dorsal spine about half of second dorsal spine. First dorsal noticeably smaller than second dorsal, its base length half of second dorsal base. Rear margin of pectoral not reaching to first dorsal spine. Subterminal notch present on upper caudal lobe. Distance from rear end of pelvic base to origin of lower caudal lobe about half of distance from axil of pectoral to pelvic origin. Teeth on jaws dissimilar; upper jaw teeth 5 〜 7 cusped; lower jaw teeth with single cusp and strongly oblique. Dermal denticles slender, closely spaced (Fig.), and giving the skin a velvety feel. Black flank marks obscure.
Distribution:
Reported from off Uruguay (type locarity), Virginia, and Florida. Off Suriname.
Remarks:
The present species is discernible from the other species of the genus in having the slender denticles closely spaced and obscure flank marks on the ventral side of body. (Uyeno and Sasaki)
