A well developed spine on each dorsal fin. Spine length (exposed) of second dorsal 3/4 of internarial width. First dorsal originated above the inner margin of pectoral. Second dorsal noticeably smaller than first dorsal, its base length 2/3 of first dorsal base. Distance from rear end of first dorsal base to point where second dorsal spine exposed from skin equal to length from tip of snout to axil of pectoral. Inner corner of pectoral projecting backward prominently. Teeth on jaws finely serrated; upper jaw teeth subtriangular and nearly erect; cusps of lower jaw teeth strongly oblique. Dermal denticles not overlapping each other and without cusps; ridges on crowns confined to their anterior edges (Fig.).
Distribution:
Eastern Atlantic from the Mediterranean to off Senegal; Gulf of Mexico and Suriname.
Remarks:
Easily distinguished by the shape of dermal denticles. (Uyeno and Sasaki)
