特 徴：
（属）： 体は紡錘形。尾柄各側に小さい2隆起線とその間に大きい1中央隆起線がある。腹鰭間の肉質突起は1個で，大きい。背鰭は2基で，広く離れており，その間隔は胸鰭長より大きい。第1背鰭は9～11棘。体前部の鱗は大型化し，胸甲を形作るよう変形している。側線域を除けば，体は胸甲より後方が無鱗。両顎歯は微小で，円錘形。（種）： 胸鰭後端は，側線上方の無鱗域の前縁より後位。
分 布：
太平洋，インド洋，大西洋の暖海域，地中海。模式産地-パプア・ニューギニアの北岸。
備 考：
同属のマルソウダもまたスリナムやフレンチ・ギアナの沖合に分布している。 （藤井）
Distinctive characters：
(Genus)：Body fusiform. Two small keels and a large median keel between them on each side of caudal peduncle. The fleshy process between pelvic fins single and large. Two dorsal fins widely separated, the space between them longer than length of pectoral fin. Nine to 11 spines in first dorsal fin. Anterior body scales enlarged and modified to form a corselet. Body naked posterior to the corselet except along lateral line. Teeth on jaws minute, conical. (Species)：Posterior end of pectoral fin extending beyond vertical from anterior margin of scaleless area above lateral line.
Distribution：
Warm warters of Pacific, Indian, and Atlantic oceans, and Mediterranean Sea. Type locality-On the northern coast of Papua New Guinea.
Remarks：
Acongener, A.rochei(Risso)is also distributed off Suriname and French Guiana. (Fujii)
