Distinctive characters:
(Genus):Body compressed. Two small keels and a large median keel between them on either side of caudal peduncle. Seven to 10 dorsal and 7 to 10 anal fin-lets. Teeth on jaws strong, compressed, almost triangular. Body completely covered with munute scales. A corselet of scales obscure. Fleshy process between pelvic fins double and small. Lateral line single. Snout shorter than postorbital length of head. Posterior end of maxillary exposed. At least 3 gill rakers present. First dorsal fin with 14〜19 spines. (Species):Lateral line abruptly curving downward below second dorsal fin. Gill rakers 1〜3+6〜10, total 7〜13*. Vertebrae 41〜42*. Young adult with spots on sides of body similar to those in S.brasiliensis.
Distribution:
Western Atlantic from Massachusetts to Rio de Janeiro.
