本種はメキシコ湾からアメリカ大西洋岸にいるS.maculatusと西インド諸島産S.regalisと近縁である。*印はCollette and Russo(1978)より引用。 (藤井)
Distinctive characters:
(Species):Lateral line gradually curving down toward caudal peduncle. Rows of spots along sides of body but no broken lines. Pectoral fin short (3.6〜5.9% of FL), with 21〜24 rays*. Small scales on pectoral fin base, not extending a great distance on fin. Gill rakers 1〜2+9〜13, total 11〜16*. Vertebrae 47〜49*.
Distribution:
the Atlantic coasts of Central and South America.
Remarks:
This species is closely related to Atlantic Spanish mackerel(Scomberomorus maculatus)from the Gulf of Mexico and the Atlantic coast of the United States, and Cero (S.regalis)from the Bahamas and West Indies. *Reference data from Collette and Russo (1978). (Fujii)
