(Genus):Body fusiform, somewhat compressed. Eye large. Skin with spinous bony tubercles. A distinct keel present along midventral line between pelvic fin and anus. Lateral line single straight, but obscure. Pelvic fin not reduced, consisting one spine and 5 soft rays. Dorsal and anal fins each with 2 fin-lets. Vomer and palatine with teeth. Caudal peduncle without lateral keel. (Species):One species, Ruvettus pretiosus.
Distribution:
Warm waters of the world seas including the Mediterranean Sea. Type locality-Messina.
Remarks:
Revettus pretiosusis the only gempylid fish distributed in the Mediterranean Sea. (Fujii)
