(Family):Mouth large, upper jaw not protractile. Two to four large, strong canines on anterior premaxillary. Lower jaw preceding upper jaw. Two dorsal fins not clearly separated; the first with 8〜28 spines, the last spine shortest; the second with a single spine and 16〜23 soft rays. Anal fin with 1〜3 spines and 16〜20 soft rays. Dorsal and anal fins with fin-lets in some species. Pectoral fin with 13〜16 rays, much shorer than head. Pelvic fin with 0〜1 spine and 0〜5 soft rays. Lateral line scales slender, tubular, embedded just beneath the skin. Lower margin of preopercle smooth. A pair of nostril on each side. (Genus):Two lateral lines consisting of upper and lower branches, originating at upper edge of gill opening, running backward along dorsal and ventral contours of body to base of caudal fin respectively. Pelvic fin with one spine and 5 soft rays, shorter than pectoral fin. Vomer and palatine with teeth. (Species):Eye diameter longer than interorbital width. Dorsal origin just above or slightly posterior to the posterior margin of preopercle.
