特 徴：
（属）： 背鰭は2基あり，第1背鰭は7～8棘，第2背鰭は1棘9～10軟条。臀鰭は2棘9軟条。胸鰭の長さは中庸。両顎の縫合部には強い犬歯がない。鱗は櫛鱗で離脱しやすい。主鰓蓋骨の中心棘は扁平で弱いか，又は針状で強い。下鰓蓋骨と間鰓蓋骨の縁辺は鋸歯状か，又は円滑。上主上顎骨はない。尾鰭は2叉する。脊椎骨数は25個。（種）：主鰓蓋骨の中心棘は扁平で弱い。舌に歯がない。前上顎骨歯は微小な円錐歯。第1背鰭は7棘（まれに8棘）*。鰓耙数は26～30本*。側線鱗は46～49枚*。幽門垂は7～14本。*背椎骨は10+15個。体高は体長の22.4～29.6％。尾柄長は22.0～26.3％*。幼魚は臀鰭後方に環状の黒線，尾柄後端に黒色帯をもつ。
分 布：
大西洋の暖海域。模式産地-チェサピーク湾口の沖合。
備 考：

Distinctive characters：
(Genus)：Two separated dorsal fins, the first Ⅶ～Ⅷ and the second Ⅰ, 9～10.
Anal fin rays Ⅱ,9. Pectoral fin moderate in length. No strong canines near
symphysis on both jaws. Scales ctenoid, deciduous. The main spine of opercle
either weak, flattened or strong, needle-like. Margins of subopercle and
interopercle serrated or smooth. Supramaxillary absent. Caudal fin forked.
Vertebrae 25. (Species)：The main spine of opercle weak, flattend. No teeth
on tongue. Premaxillary teeth minute, conical. First dorsal fin 7, rarely
8*. Gill rakers 26～30*. Lateral line scales 46～49*. Pyloric caeca 7～14*. Vertebrae 10+15. Body depth 22.4～29.6％ of SL; caudal peduncle length 22.0～26.3*. In young, a thin ring of embedded melanophores behind anal fin and a broad black band on posterior end of caudal peduncle.
Distribution：
Warm waters of Atlantic Ocean. Type locality-off entrance to Chesapeake Bay.
