Body elongate and compressed, body depth 2.5〜2.9 in SL. Eye large, its diameter 2.4〜3.0 in head length. Body covered with ctenoid scales. Both jaws with conical teeth and no canines. Posterior margin of preopercle serrated. Caudal peduncle slender. Caudal fin forked. Body pale red with a black spot on posterodorsal part of opercle, another black spot below second dorsal fin and a third on upper part of cadual peduncle; posterior edges of second dorsal and anal fins black; caudal fin edged posteriorly with narrow black line.
Distribution:
From New England, Bermuda to Brazil.
Remarks:
This species differs from other Atlantic species of Apogon by having three black spots on the body and no ventral expansion of the caudal peduncle spot. (Matsuura)
