Body oblong and compressed, body depth 2.6〜3.0 in SL. Body covered with ctenoid scales. Eye large, its diameter 3.5〜3.9 in head. Both jaws with canine teeth. Posterior edge of preopercle serrated. Caudal peduncle slender. Caudal fin forked. Body pale red; a longitudinal dark band extending from snout to upper posterior part of preopercle; edge of caudal fin black, other fins pale.
Distribution:
Both sides of the Atlantic; in the western Atlantic from the Bahamas to Suriname.
Remarks:
This species in distinguishable from other species of Atlantic Apogon by the canines on both jaws and nine soft rays in the anal fin. (Matsuura)
