(Family):Body depressed. Ventral surface markedly flattened. Tail stout and distinct from the disc. (Genus):Ventral surface of body completely covered with scales. Pectoral fin lobes separated from tail. Disc triangular in outline. Subopercular spine absent. Gill filaments on 2nd, 3rd and lower arm of 4th arches. No lateral-line pores on ventral surface of tail. Teeth present on jaws. tongue, palatine, and vomer. Gill rakers present on all 4 arches. Two rows of tubercle-like scales between anus and anal fin origin. (Species):Dorsal surface of disc light brown, without spot. Dark brown bands on anterior to anal fin origin.
Distribution:
This species is distributed in western Atlantic, konwn from southeastern America, Gulf Mexico, Caribben Sea, and northern South America.
Remarks:
Z. elater differs in its eye-like spots on dorsal surface of disc from this species. (Uyeno and Aizawa)
