クダモノツブリ（Apple Murex）

特 徴：
殻高95mm，殻径53mm。殻は厚く堅牢。胎殻は淡紅色で，弱い格子状彫刻がある。殻表には凡そ120°ごとに太い縦張肋があるが，少しずつずれているため，殻頂方からみると上（後）方へねじれた軌跡を描く。縦張肋上は螺肋が強調されて尖った突起になっているが，鋭く長い棘にはならず肩のものは最も強い角となる。縦肋の殻口寄り側は棘突起の凹凸に従って多少鱗片状に立つ。縦張肋間は低い縦肋が1〜4本あって，強い螺肋と交ったところは尖った瘤状になっている。螺肋は数本の強い主肋のほかには数10本の2次肋，3次肋があるが，多かれ少なかれ顆粒状になり，その不規則性のため，殻表は極めて粗い。殻表は白色から赤橙色で濃淡がある。殻口は丸く，外唇は細かく刻まれ淡紅色。その上に3〜4本の褐帯がある。内方もピンク色。内唇から軸唇にかけて半月型の淡紅色の滑層が拡がり，外周は襟状に立ち上っている。滑層の外縁は暗褐色に染まり，軸上に弱い襞がある。前管溝は太くやヽ反り，1〜3の棘があるが，直前の水管溝が左斜方に張り出し二叉しているようにさえみえる。水管溝は暗色。ふたは卵形，核は前寄りにある。
採集記録：
水深40〜85m（生貝多数）。
分 布：
ノースカロライナからフロリダ，ブラジルにかけて。バミューダ。浅海。
Diagnostic characters：
Height 95 mm, breadth 53 mm. Shell thick, solid. Varix presents at about 120° turns but slightly dislocated, carrying pointed projections but never spinous. Axial ribs between adjoining varices 1-4, forming knobs and granules at intersections of primary and secondary spiral ribs. Surface white to orangy red. Aperture oval with crenulated outer-lip carrying 3-4 brown bands, pinkish within. Inner to columellar lips with semicircular pinkish callus of which margin raised and dark brownish. Siphonal canal thick, recurved, with 1-3 spines. Previous siphonal canal projected obliquely.
Distribution：
North Carolina to Florida, Bermuda to Brazil and off Suriname.
