A large species having characteristic ornamentation of chelipeds. Anterior shield of carapace as long as broad, being provided with scattered tufts of hairs. Rostrum triangular with obtuse apex, and subequal to lateral angle. Eyestalk long and widening distally, with tufts of setae mainly on its basal part of dorsal surface; ophthalmic scale broad basally and spiniform distally, having indistinct serrations at its tip. Antennular peduncle exceeds cornea by distal one-third of distal segment, and antennal peduncle ends at base of cornea. Scaphocerite armed with two or three spines on its inner margin, being markedly hairy. Chelipeds very heavy and the right being slightly larger; carpus, palm and fingers thickly covered with characteristic scaly depressed tubercles which are made by some grouped granules and surrounded by appressed setae; five tubercles on inner margin of carpus markedly strong. Fingers very stout and opening obliquely. Surfaces of ambulatory legs also scaly, and anterior borders of carpi and propodi strongly spinose; dactyli with dense long setae, being slightly twisted.

West Atlantic from North Carolina through the West Indies and Suriname to Brazil, 27-90 m deep.
