Carapace and abdomen not hard; orbito-antennal and branchio-cardiac grooves distinct, and the latter bifurcated anteriorly; branchiostegal and antennal spines small, but distinct. Rostrum very slender and about one and a half as long as carapace, curving downward beyond eye and then extending horizontally; five dorsal teeth at level of orbit, proximal two of which are much smaller; distal half of lower margin with 14-21 teeth which are close together and not protruded beyond general contour of rostrum. Sixth abdominal segment about twice as long as the fifth, pleura being small and having an acute tooth near the rounded end. Telson with three pairs of spines.
Distribution:
Previously known only from the Gulf of Mexico, 530-900 m deep.
Remarks:
This species is very close to the East Atlantic analogue, P. carinata Holthuis from Liberia and Angola, but distinguished from it by having only 5 dorsal rostral teeth instead of 6 or 7, 14-21 teeth on lower margin of rostrum instead of 13-15 teeth, the carpus of second pereiopod subdivided into 22 or 23 in contrast to 11-17, and 20-34 posterior spines on the merus of third pereiopod instead of 13-15.
