Body elongate, slightly depressed, cylindrical. Head, small, about 3.8 times in SL, body depth 4.3-5.0 times in SL. Snout longer than eye. Mouth small and protractile. Maxilla hardly reaching anterior margin of eye. Lower jaw slightly shorter than upper. Eye small, 6.8 times in HL. Single nostril with a flap. Fine conical teeth in narrow bands(2 or 3 rows) in both jaws. Interorbital region wide, slightly concave, its width nearly equal to snout length, 8-9 small scales between eyes. Scales on body weak ctenoid. Occiput, interorbital region, cheeks and opercles covered with small scales. Suborbital and snout regions naked. Lateral line single, running nearly straight dorsally, from upper end of oprcle to caudal base. Pectoral fin obliquely truncated, with upper rays longest, nearly as long as head, much longer than pelvic fin. Pelvic fin situated slightly anterior to pectoral fin origin, not reaching anus. Caudal fin truncate(young) or emarginate(adults). First dorsal fin base short, second dorsal and anal fin bases long. Caudal peduncle deep, about as long as snout. Body blue brown dorsally and silvery yellow ventrally. First and second dorsal fins greyish, caudal fin brownish, their distal parts yellowish. Anal fin pale brown.
Distribution:
Both Chilean and Argentine Patagonia.
Remarks:
Known to attain up to 60 cm SL. Popular food fish in the Falkland islands.
