特 徴：
背鰭5棘，35軟条，臀鰭33軟条，胸鰭24軟条，腹鰭1棘，5軟条，鰓条骨数6，鰓耙数8+0+22=30，側線鱗数49（上列），8（下列）。頭長は体長の35.8％，眼径は9.2％，体高は25.6％，吻長は8.8％，両眼間隔は4.3％，上顎長は11.4％，尾柄高は9.0％，胸鰭長は23.2％，腹鰭長は22.4％，第1背鰭高は10.8％，第2背鰭高は11.4％，臀鰭高は9.5％。体は延長し，体高は低く側扁する。頭は小さく，体長は頭長の約3.5倍。吻は眼径よりわずかに短い。両眼間隔域は狭く，4～5列の小鱗が不規則に並ぶ。眼は大きく，頭長は眼径の3.9倍。口は小さく，上顎後端は眼の前縁をわずかに越える。下顎は上顎より前方に突出する。両顎歯は歯叢をなし，外側歯は内側歯よりやや大きく，とくに上顎前方の縫合部付近の歯は大きい。鋤骨と口蓋骨に絨毛状歯がある。頭部は小円鱗におおわれる。体側鱗は弱い櫛鱗。鰓蓋は小さく，やや厚い。鼻孔は1個で周囲に低い管状皮弁を有す。胸鰭は丸く短い。腹鰭は胸鰭よりかなり前方に位置する。第1背鰭の基底は短いが，第2背鰭と臀鰭の基底は著しく長い。尾鰭後縁は丸い。側線は2列で，上列は長く，下列は短い。体長は約20cmに達する。
分 布：
アルゼンチン パタゴニア，フォークランド諸島，南ジョージア島。
備 考：
南ジョージア島に分布するものと，より北方に分布するものを亜種段階で区別して，前者にP. guntheri shagensisを後者にP. guntheri guntheriを適用する研究者もあるが（Balushkin and Permitin, 1982），ここでは種段階の適用にとどめておく。最近の研究ではノトセニア亜科はPatagonotothen16種，Pagothenia2種，およびNotothenia28種の合計3属46種からなる（Andersen and Hureau, 1979）。

Description：
D Ⅴ, 35; A33; P124; P2Ⅰ, 5; GR8+0+22=30; BR6; LLS49(upper), 8(lower). HL35.8% of SL; ED9.2; BD25.6; SN8.8; IO4.3; UJ11.4; CP9.0; P1L23.2; P2L22.4; D1H10.8; D2H11.4; AH9.5.
Body elongate, compressed, body depth about 5 times in SL, Head small about 3.5 times in SL. Snout short, slightly shorter than eye diameter. Eye large, about 3.9 times in head. Mouth small, posterior margin of upper jaw extending to slightly posterior to anterior margin of eye, both jaws subequal anteriorly. Teeth in bands on both jaws, those on outer row larger than reminders, several teeth near symphysis on upper jaw extremely large. Fine villiform teeth on vomer and palatines. Interorbital region narrow, with 4 or 5 scales between eyes. Upper surface of head, cheeks and opercles covered with cycloid scales. Scales on body weak ctenoid. Nostril single, with a tube- like flap. Gill-rakers short, stout. Pseudobranchiae present. Pectoral fin round, short, its length 1.5 times in head. Pelvic fin situated extremely anterior to level of pectoral fin base. First dorsal fin low with short base, its longest spine not more than 40% of head. Two lateral lines; upper line running from upper insertion of opercle with gradual curve entirely to caudal peduncle region; lower line short, running on posterior part of tail region to caudal base. Body brownish dorsally and yellowish brown ventrally, irregular and obscure darker blotches distributed on body.
Distribution：
Argentine Patagonia, around Falkland Islands, and South Georgia.
Remarks：
Recent study of Nototheniinae defines three genera, Patagonotothen including 16 species, Pagothenia including 2 species and Notothenia including 28 species(Andersen and Hureau, 1979)
