南ジョージア島に分布するものと,より北方に分布するものを亜種段階で区別して,前者にP. guntheri shagensisを後者にP. guntheri guntheriを適用する研究者もあるが(Balushkin and Permitin, 1982),ここでは種段階の適用にとどめておく。最近の研究ではノトセニア亜科はPatagonotothen16種,Pagothenia2種,およびNotothenia28種の合計3属46種からなる(Andersen and Hureau, 1979)。

Body elongate, compressed, body depth about 5 times in SL, Head small about 3.5 times in SL. Snout short, slightly shorter than eye diameter. Eye large, about 3.9 times in head. Mouth small, posterior margin of upper jaw extending to slightly posterior to anterior margin of eye, both jaws subequal anteriorly. Teeth in bands on both jaws, those on outer row larger than reminders, several teeth near symphysis on upper jaw extremely large. Fine villiform teeth on vomer and palatines. Interorbital region narrow, with 4 or 5 scales between eyes. Upper surface of head, cheeks and opercles covered with cycloid scales. Scales on body weak ctenoid. Nostril single, with a tube- like flap. Gill-rakers short, stout. Pseudobranchiae present. Pectoral fin round, short, its length 1.5 times in head. Pelvic fin situated extremely anterior to level of pectoral fin base. First dorsal fin low with short base, its longest spine not more than 40% of head. Two lateral lines; upper line running from upper insertion of opercle with gradual curve entirely to caudal peduncle region; lower line short, running on posterior part of tail region to caudal base. Body brownish dorsally and yellowish brown ventrally, irregular and obscure darker blotches distributed on body.
Distribution:
Argentine Patagonia, around Falkland Islands, and South Georgia.
Remarks:
Recent study of Nototheniinae defines three genera, Patagonotothen including 16 species, Pagothenia including 2 species and Notothenia including 28 species(Andersen and Hureau, 1979)
