チリ パタゴニア;ニュージーランド(Makushok, 1976)と南アフリカ(Iwamoto, in press)からも知られている。
備 考:
本種はニュージーランドに分布するCoryphaenoides serrulatus Günther, 1878に最も近縁と考えられる(McCann and McKnight, 1980)。

Description:

Body compressed and elongate, depth at dorsal origin much larger than width. Head large, about 1.5-1.6 times in preanal length. Snout short with large, finely spinous, median tubercle, and smaller accessory tubercles on both sides, its length 3.7-4.0 times in HL. Interorbital region fairly depressed, its width slightly shorter than snout. Single minute barbel on chin, its length about one-third of scale width. Mouth large, inferior and protractile. Villiform teeth in bands separated by small space anteriorly on both jaws. No teeth on vomer or palatines. No pseudobranchiae. Gill-rakers slightly elongate, nub-like. Small ctenoid scales on body and head. Each scale with many small, irregularly placed spines directed backward. First dorsal fin large with anterior margin of 2nd spine serrated. Second dorsal fin very low, originating two-fifths along body length. Pectoral fin long, outer ray elongate, 2.5-3.0 times longer than next longest ray. Pelvic fin situated below pectoral fin origin, its outer ray elongate, 3-5 times longer than next longest ray. Anal fin higher than 2nd dorsal fin. Single lateral line running from upper insertion of opercle to caudal fin base, curving downward abruptly below 1st dorsal fin origin. A luminescent organ present around anus. Anus situated just anterior to anal fin origin. Buccal cavity, lining of opercle, and belly black.
Distribution:
Chilean Patagonia; also known from south of New Zealand (Makushok, 1976), and South Africa (Iwamoto, in press).
Remarks:
This species is most closely related to Coryphaenoides serrulatus Günther, 1878, known from New Zealand in 750-2,070 m (McCann and McKnight, 1980).
