Body elongate with rather depressed head, compressed posteriorly, gradually tapering into slender tail. Head stout and large, 1.5-1.6 times in preanal length. Snout long, pointed and triangular in dorsal view, well anterior to mouth, its length more than orbit diameter. Eye large, orbit diameter 3.2-3.5 times in head. Mouth inferior, rather small, protrusible, posterior margin of upper jaw reaching to anterior margin of pupil. A short barbel on chain. Nostrils situated just anterior to eye, crescentic posterior nostril much larger than round anterior nostril. Interorbital region slightly concave, with well developed nasal crest and parietal-epiotic ridges (lateral nasal ridge continuous to infraorbital ridge). Posterior margin of opercle slightly concave. Villiform teeth in bands on both jaws. No teeth on vomer or palatines. No pseudobranchiae. Gill-rakers spinous. Ctenoid scales on head and body, each scale with small spines directed backward in 7-10 rows. First dorsal fin high with short base, second dorsal fin low with long base. Anal fin well developed, higher than second dorsal fin. Pectoral fin rather short, as long as snout. Pelvic fin small, its origin slightly posterior to pectoral fin origin. Single lateral line, descending gradually anteriorly, nearly straight posteriorly. Anus situated just anterior to anal fin origin. Body brown. Belly, branchiostegal membrane black. All fins dark brown. Buccal and gill cavities black.

The depth range is about 200 m to 1,200 m.
