Body elongate and compressed with tapering tall. Head large and hard, about 1.5-1.6 times in preanal length. Snout short, pointed, well anterior to mouth. Eye very large, about 2.4-2.5 times in HL. Interorbital region flat, width about half of orbit. Small barbel on chin. Mouth inferior, protractile. Minute and conical tooth band on both jaws, outer row slightly enlarged on upper jaw. No teeth on vomer or palatine. No pseudobranchiae. Gill-rakers small, nub-like. Large ctenoid scales all over head and body. Scales on head very thick and stiff, somewhat armor-like. Each scale with many sharp apines in 10-15 rows, directed backward. First dorsal fin large, dusky in color, its origin above pelvic fin origin. Second dorsal fin very low, its origin above anal fin origin. Pectoral fin rather small. Pelvic fin with 7 rays, outer one filamentous, its length about equal to pectoral fin length. Anal fin with dusky color, higher than 2nd dorsal fin. Single lateral line running from upper insertion of pectoral fin to caudal fin base, curving downward under first dorsal fin base. Four scales above lateral line. A luminescent organ present around anus. Anus situated just anterior to anal fin base. Eight to nine irregular dark cross-bars on back.
Distribution:
Both Chilean and Argentine Patagonia, also known from New Zealand (McCann and McKnight, 1980) and Australia (Munro, 1957).
Remarks:
The depth range is 366-1,086 m, most specimens occurring between about 400-800 m around New Zealand (McCann and McKnight, 1980).
