Body greatly compressed. Dorsal profile of head concave. First dorsal fin with two spines, the first spine long and feeble, the second greatly reduced and hidden in skin. Five teeth on each upper jaw, three in an outer row and two in an inner row. Three teeth on each lower jaw. A single encasing scale on the posteroventral part of pelvis, but greatly reduced and mostly indiscernible from other body scales. Scales on body small and numerous, giving skin velvety feeling. Caudal peduncle longer than deep. Body brown or olive with scrawled blue lines and spots.
Distribution:
Western Atlantic from Bermuda to Brazil.
Remarks:
This species is similar to A. scriptus in color but different from it by the lower numbers of second dorsal and anal fin rays. (Matsuura)
