Body greatly compressed. Dorsal profile of head slightly concave. First dorsal fin with two spines, the first spine long and feeble, the second greatly reduced and hidden in skin. Five teeth on each upper jaw, three in an outer row and two in an inner row. Three teeth on each lower jaw in a single row. A single encasing scale on the posteroventral part of pelvis, but greatly reduced and mostly indiscernible from other body scales. Scales on body relatively large and sparse, giving skin rough feeling. Caudal peduncle elongate, longer than deep. Small rounded orange spots scattered on plain body. Lips blackish brown.
Distribution:
Western Atlantic from Nova Scotia to Brazil.
Remarks:
This species is similar to A. heudelotii in body form but clearly distinguishable from it by small orange spots and relatively large scales. (Matsuura)
