特 徴：
体は長く，強く側扁する。第1背鰭は2棘からなるが，第2棘は退縮し，皮下に埋没している。腰骨後部に単一の鞘状鱗があるが，非常に微小なため肉眼による識別は困難。頭長は尾鰭長より大。上顎の外列歯は6本。内列歯は4本。下顎には6本の歯が1列にならぶ。体をおおう鱗は小さく，手で触れると滑らか。尾柄は長く，尾柄長は尾柄高より大。体は暗灰色で不規則な暗色斑が散在する。

全世界の温，熱帯域。
備 考：
本種は同属の他種から背鰭と臀鰭の軟条数が多く，尾柄長が尾柄高より大きい等の特徴により区別される。 （松浦）
Distinctive characters：
Body oblong and strongly compressed. First dorsal fin with two spines; the second spine reduced and embeded in skin. A very small encasing scale on posterior part of pelvis. Head larger than caudal fin. Upper jaw teeth arranged in two rows; the outer series with 6 teeth, the inner with 4 teeth. Lower jaw with 6 teeth arranged in a single row. Scales on body very small. Caudal peduncle long, longer than deep. Body gray with irregular dark blotches.
Distribution：
Warm and tropical regions of the world.
Remarks：
This species is separable from other species of Aluterus by the higher numbers of soft dorsal and anal fin rays and by the elongated caudal peduncle. (Matsuura)
