(Subfamily): Angle of preopercle without a long spine (Corniger with 1 or 2 long spines). Anal soft rays more than 10. (Genus): Dorsal fin spines 12. Infraorbital bones without spine. Opercle with a spine extending beyond opercular membrane. (Species): Vertical series of scales above lateral line under midpoint of spinous dorsal fin 2 1/2. Last dorsal spine longer than penultimate one, and close to 1st dorsal ray.
Distribution:
From North Carolina, Gulf of Mexico, Caribbean sea, to northern Brazil.
Remarks:
This is the only species of this genus in the western Atlantic. (Uyeno and Sato)
