特 徴：
（亜科）： 前鰓蓋骨の隅角部に1本の長大な棘がない（ただし Corniger には1～2本の長い棘がある）。臀鰭軟条は10本以上。（属）： 背鰭棘は11本。眼下骨に棘がない。主鰓蓋骨の棘は鰓蓋膜を越えない。（種）： 背鰭軟条部と臀鰭は鱗によって覆われる。
分 布：
バーミューダからフロリダ，メキシコ湾，カリブ海，北部ブラジル，および西アフリカ熱帯域。
備 考：
本属のうち本種のみが西部大西洋に分布する。 （上野・佐藤）
Distinctive characters：
(Subfamily)： Angle of preopercle without a long spine (Corniger with 1 or 2 long spines). Anal soft rays more than 10. (Genus)： Dorsal spines 11. Infraorbital bones without spine. Opercular spine not extending beyond opercular mambrane. (Species)： Soft dorsal and anal fins covered with scales.
Distribution：
From Bermuda, Florida, Gulf of Mexico, Caribbean Sea, to northern Brazil, and also tropical West Africa.
Remarks：
This is the only species of this genus in the western Atlantic. (Uyeno and Sato)
