(Subfamily):Angle of preopercle with a long spine. Anal soft rays 7〜10. (Genus): Last dorsal spine shortest, not close to 1st dorsal soft ray. Anterior soft dorsal and upper caudal fin lobe not markedly elongated. Tip of upper jaw equal to or slightly projecting beyond lower jaw, tip of lower jaw not markedly projecting beyond upper jaw. (Species): This is the only species that has 11〜12 dorsal soft rays and 14 pectoral rays. Usually one small black spot present on tip of mambrane between 1st and 2nd dorsal spines. Nasal without spine.
Distribution:
From South Carolina, Gulf of Mexico, Caribbean Sea, to Suriname.
Remarks:
Holocentrus has markedly elongated anterior soft dorsal and upper caudal lobe, Flammeo has the lower jaw markedly projecting beyond the upper jaw. (Uyeno and Sato)
