Counts and measurements：D 10; A 28〜29; P1 13; SLL 76〜79. HL 23.9〜24.7% of SL; eye diameter 3.3; snout length 12.9〜13.4; snout to vent 65.1〜66.7; predorsal 61.4〜63.0; preanal 61.4〜63.6.
特 徴：
（属）： 側線域を除き，体は無鱗。背鰭は胸鰭起部〜尾鰭基底間の中央付近にある。側線鱗はほぼ菱形で，著しく細長くはない。下顎の先端は上方へ強く湾曲し，何種かはその先に非骨質性の小突起をもつ。眼前に小黒点がない。頭部から腹鰭までの腹中線に沿って走る管状発光体は存在しない。下顎と口蓋骨には長い，良く発達した歯がある。体に鞍状の暗色斑がない。胸鰭と腹鰭は小さい。臀鰭は25〜32軟条。（種）： 腹鰭起部は背鰭起部の直下。体色は全体に黒色。
分 布：
三大洋の熱帯水域。模式産地-セレベス海。
備 考：
本属は16種を含み，その内4種が大西洋から知られている（Post, 1972; Rofen, 1966）。本種の和名は黒い体色に由来する。 （藤井）
Distinctive characters：
(Genus)： Body and head naked except lateral line region. Dorsal fin located around midway between pectoral insertion and caudal fin base. Lateral line scales roughly diamond-shaped, not so elongate. Lower jaw with tip distinctly curved upward; some species with a small nonossified prolongation on its tip. No black spot before eye. No luminous duct along midventral line between head and pelvic fins. Lower jaw and palatines with long, well developed teeth. No saddle-like dark blotches on body. Pectoral and pelvic fins small. Anal fin rays 25〜32. (Species)： Pelvic fin insertion just below dorsal fin origin. Color of body overall black.
Distribution：
Tropical waters of three major oceans. Type locality-Celebes Sea.
Remarks：
The genus includes 16 species, four of which are known from the Atlantic (Post, 1972; Rofen, 1966). (Fujii)
