(Family):Eye round, directed laterally. Teeth on jaws and palatine in 1 or 2 rows. Dorsal fin small, located behind midway of total length. Lateral line scales embedded, not caducous. (Genus):Teeth on lower jaw short and weak. Head and body covered with caducous scales. Gill rakers specialized in form; each raker base with 3〜10 needle-like spines of irregular length. Luminous organ absent. Pectoral fin small, with 14〜17 rays. Anal fin rays 20〜26. (Species):Body scales overlying lateral line scales without pores. Premaxillaries with saw-like teeth. Snout length 12.2〜13.1% of SL; predorsal length 58.8〜60.8; distance between verticals from dorsal origin and pelvic insertion 0.6〜2.0.

Three major oceans. Type locality-Denmark.
Remarks:
This species includes 3 subspecies (Post, 1972; Rofen, 1966). (Fujii)
