特 徴：
（科）：体は細長く，円筒状。鰭に棘がない。背鰭は1基で体中央部より前位。背鰭基底長は頭長より短い。腹鰭は腹位，脂鰭がある。発光器はない。頭部及び体部に鱗があり，側線鱗は肥大しない。（属）：腹鰭は9軟条，内側の鰭条は外側のものと同長かそれより短い口蓋骨に2列の歯帯がある。（種）：側線鱗は54〜60枚，背鰭基底と側面鱗の間に4列の鱗がある。背鰭起部は吻端より脂鰭起部に近い。下顎は上顎より長く，口を閉じた時に上方から見える。吻長は眼径にほぼ等しい。胸鰭の先端は腹鰭起部を越え，その長さは体長の17.5〜22％である。
分 布：
メキシコ湾，カリブ海，南米北部に分布する。
備 考：
本種は本属の西部大西洋種から，計数的形質及び下顎が上顎より長いことなどで，他種と区別できる。（上野・藍澤）
Distinctive characters：
Body slender, cylindrical. Dorsal fin single, anterior to middle of body. Adipose fin present. Photophore absent. Lateral line present, scales not enlarged. Pelvic fin rays 9; the inner rays about equal to or shorter than outer rays. Palatine with 2 tooth raws. Lateral-line scales 54〜60. Complete scale rows between lateral line and dorsal fin origin 4. Dorsal fin origin closer to adipose fin than to tip of snout. Lower jaw longer than upper jaw, dorsally visible when mouth closed. Snout length about equal to eye diameter. Pectoral fin tip exceeding pelvic fin insertion, its length 17.5〜22% of SL.
Distribution：
This species known from Gulf of Mexico, Caribbean Sea, and northern South America.
Remarks：
This species is distinguishable by its 4 complete scale rows above lateral line and other meristic characters. (Uyeno and Aizawa)
