特 徴：
（科）：体は細長く，円筒状。鰭に棘がない。背鰭は1基で体中央部より前位。背鰭基底長は頭長より短い。腹鰭は腹位。脂鰭がある。発光器はない。頭部及び体部に鱗があり，側線鱗は肥大しない。（属）：腹鰭は9軟条，内側の鰭条は外側のものと同長かそれより短い。口蓋骨に2列の歯帯がある。（種）：側線鱗は51〜56枚，背鰭基底と側線鱗の間に4列の鱗がある。背鰭起部は吻端と脂鰭起部のほぼ中央にある。下顎は上顎より短く，口を閉じた時に上方から見えない。体高は腹鰭起部間の幅とほぼ同長。胸鰭先端は腹鰭起部を越える。
分 布：
北米東岸からメキシコ湾，カリブ海，南米北部の沿岸に分布する。
備 考：
本種は西部大西洋種のマエソ属中で唯一の，下顎が上顎より短い種である。（上野・藍澤）
Distinctive characters：
Body slender, cylindrical. Fins without spines. Dorsal fin single, anterior to middle of body. Adipose fin present. Photophores absent. Lateral line present, scales not enlarged. Pelvic fin ray 9, the inner rays about equal to or shorter than outer rays. Palatine with 2 tooth rows. Lateral-line scales 51〜56, rows of complete scales between lateral line and base of dorsal fin 4. Dorsal fin origin about midpoint between adipose fin and tip of snout. Lower jaw shorter than upper jaw, its tip not visible from above when mouth closed. Body depth and width at origin of pelvic fin about equal. Pectoral fin tip exceeding pelvic fin insertion when depressed.
Distribution：
Distributed from east coast of U.S.A. to Gulf of Mexico, Caribbean Sea, and northern South America.
Remarks：
This is the only species having shorter lower jaw than the upper in the genus from the western Atlantic. (Uyeno and Aizawa)
