特 徴：
（種）：鬚はかなり細く，その長さは頭長の1.4倍。鬚の基部2/3の部分は深黒色を呈するが，先端1/3の部分はほぼ白色で，肥大している（図）。肥大部では中軸の背腹両側が無色透明な膜状となっており，そこに大小不定形の発光体を備える。中軸は先端が黒色である以外は，淡色。
分 布：
北大西洋の温帯〜熱帯水域。模式産地-33°18′N，56°03′W。
備 考：
鬚の特徴において，本標本（標準体長204，224mm）は，体長差が非常にあるにもかかわらず，M. biseriatus（模式標本，体長20〜25mm）の原記載とよく一致した。一方，Parin and Pokhilskaya (1978) は，M. biseriatusがM. melanopogon Regan et Trewavasの幼魚であると見なしている。本種の和名は鬚の肥大部にある白色の発光体に由来する。（藤井）
Distinctive characters：
(Species)：Barbel rather slender, its length 1.4 times of head length. The proximal 2/3 of barbel pitch black, and the distal 1/3 of that whitish, and expanded (Fig.). The areas both dorsal to and ventral to the axis in the expanded part colorless and transparent, membranous, with luminous bodies of various size and shape; the axis sparsely pigmented except the distal end black.
Distribution：
Temperate to tropical waters of North Atlantic. Type locality-33°18′N, 56°03′W.
Remarks：
In the characteristics of the barbel the present specimens (SL 204, 224 mm) well agreed with the original description of M. biseriatus (type, SL 20〜25 mm SL), although their sizes were much different. On the other hand, Parin and Pokhilskaya (1978) had considered M. biseriatuns to be a young stage of M. melanopogon Regan et Trewavas. (Fujii)
