特 徴：
（属）：主上顎骨歯は短く，普通30本以上あり，各歯の間隔はやや狭いが決して櫛状をなさず，内側に曲がっている。前上顎骨歯と歯骨歯は短く，決して牙状ではない。臀鰭は12〜17軟条。背鰭起部は腹鰭起部よりわずかに後位。腹側列の発光器は不連続で，1〜5個の発光器からなる密集群を形成して並ぶ。体側列の発光器は連続しており，ほとんど等間隔に並ぶ。（種）：オオトカゲハダカ1種。
分 布：
西部並びに中央大西洋の熱帯〜亜熱帯水域，メキシコ湾，カリブ海，および西部北太平洋。模式産地-北大西洋。
備 考：
本種は標準体長337mmに達することが知られている（Parin et al., 1977）。本種の和名は大型になる特徴に由来する。（藤井）
Distinctive characters：
(Genus)：Teeth on maxillary short, usually more than 30, somewhat closely spaced but never comb-like, curved inwardly. Teeth on premaxillary and dentary short, never fang-like. Anal fin with 12〜17 rays. Dorsal origin slightly posterior to pelvic insertion. Photophres of ventral row arranged in discontinuous, close-set groups of 1〜5. Photophores of lateral row continuous, about equally spaced. (Species)：One species, Heterophotus ophistoma.
Distribution：
Tropical to subtropical waters of western and central Atlantic Ocean, Gulf of Mexico, and Caribbean Sea; western North Pacific. Type locality-North Atlantic.
Remarks：
The species is known to become SL 337 mm (Parin et al., 1977). (Fujii)
