特 徴：
（属）：主上顎骨歯は6〜18本で，各歯の間隔が広くあき，前方あるいは内側に曲がっている。前上顎骨歯と前部の歯骨歯はほこ形で，内側に曲がっている。背鰭起部は腹鰭起部よりわずかに後位。臀鰭は10〜19軟条。（種）：主上顎骨歯は8〜10本*。臀鰭は13〜17軟条*。尾部発光器は臀鰭基底の後方で，弓状に曲がる。眼後発光器は1個。鬚の先端の球状体は球形ないし長さが幅の3倍程度の長円形で*，糸状物をつけない。胸部体側発光器は21〜22個，腹部体側発光器は15〜16個*。
分 布：
三大洋の暖海域。模式産地-ギニア湾。
備 考：
本属は6種を含み，大西洋から4種が知られる。本種の和名は主上顎骨歯の形に由来する。*印はGibbs (1964) より引用。（藤井）
Distinctive characters：
(Genus)：Teeth on maxillary 6〜18, widely spaced, curved anteriorly or inwardly. Teeth on premaxillary and anterior dentary hastate, curved inwardly. Dorsal origin slightly posterior to pelvic insertion. Anal fin with 10〜19 rays. (Species)：Teeth on maxillary 8〜10*. Anal fin with 13〜17 rays*. AC photophores arcuate behind base of anal fin. Postorbital luminous organ single. Distal bulb of barbel spherical or oval (up to about 3 times longer than wide)*, without filament. OV photophores 21〜22; VAL 15〜16*.
Distribution：
Warm waters of three major oceans. Type locality-Gulf of Guinea.
Remarks：
The genus includes 6 species, 4 of which are known from the Atlantic Ocean. * Reference data from Gibbs (1964). (Fujii)
