特 徴：
（科）：背鰭前方に担鰭骨からなる板状の背刀がある。（属）：背刀は7個の担鰭骨からなる。腹部発光器群12個，腹部上部発光器群6個，胸鰭上部発光器群2個。腹部発光器の縁辺に竜骨板がある。眼は望遠眼である。（種）：背鰭は9軟条。腹部上部発光器群，臀鰭前部発光器群，臀鰭発光器群，尾鰭下部発光器群は各々まとまって配列し，他の発光器群とは明確に分離する。体長は背鰭後端の体高の2倍またはそれ以上。背刀は低く，その高さは体長25〜50mmに対して2.5mm，体長50〜70mmに対して3.1mmよりも低い。下顎に細長い犬歯がない。尾鰭下部発光器群の下縁に棘状突起がない。
分 布：
本種は熱帯，温帯水域に分布し，大西洋ではカリブ海，ギニア湾，中部大西洋から報告されている。
備 考：
本種に類似するA. lynchusには下顎に細長い犬歯があり，トガリムネエソA. aculeatusには尾鰭下部発光器群の下縁に棘状突起があるので，本種と区別できる。（上野・藍澤）
Distinctive characters：
Dorsal blade formed by 7 pterygiophores. AB 12, SUAB 6, SUP 2. SUAB, PRA, A and SCA photophores set closely, not linear. Other photophores distinctly isolated. Eye telescopic, oriented dorsally. Dorsal fin rays 9. SL twice or more of height at end of dorsal fin. Dorsal blade low, its height less than 2.5 mm in 25〜50 mm SL specimen, less than 3.1 mm in 50〜70 mm SL specimen. Enlarged canine teeth absent on lower jaw. The scales of SCA without spine.
Distribution：
All tropical and temperate seas. In the Atlantic, known from Caribbean Sea, Gulf of Guinea, and Central Atlantic.
Remarks：
Two similar species, A. lynchus has a pair of enalrged canine teeth on lower jaw, and A. aculeatus has spinous lower margin of scales of SCA. (Uyeno and Aizawa)
