Dorsal blade formed by 7 pterygiophores. AB 12, SUAB 6, SUP 2. SUAB, PRA, A and SCA photophores set closely, not linear. Other photophores distinctly isolated. Eye telescopic, oriented dorsally. Dorsal fin rays 9. SL twice or more of height at end of dorsal fin. Dorsal blade low, its height less than 2.5 mm in 25〜50 mm SL specimen, less than 3.1 mm in 50〜70 mm SL specimen. Enlarged canine teeth absent on lower jaw. The scales of SCA without spine.
Distribution:
All tropical and temperate seas. In the Atlantic, known from Caribbean Sea, Gulf of Guinea, and Central Atlantic.
Remarks:
Two similar species, A. lynchus has a pair of enalrged canine teeth on lower jaw, and A. aculeatus has spinous lower margin of scales of SCA. (Uyeno and Aizawa)
