Dorsal blade formed by 7 pterygiophores. AB 12, SUAB 6, SUP 2. Eye telescopic, oriented dorsally. SUAB, PRA, A, and SCA photophores on straight line, SCA separated. Dorsal fin rays 9. Dorsal blade low, its height less than 1/3 of the length. SL longer than 3.5 of height at dorsal fin end. Two postabdominal spines in equal length, without curving.
Distribution:
All tropical and temparate seas. In the Atlantic, known from Gulf of Mexico, Caribbean Sea, and Gulf of Guinea, etc.
Remarks:
A similar species A. gigas has dorsal blade with raised posterior portion directed sphenotic spine near posterodorsal edge of orbit. (Uyeno and Aizawa)
