Counts and measurements：D 12; A 30〜31; GR 5+11; BR 9. OA 9+8; IV 9+1+11; VAV 8; AC 17〜18+7. Body depth 15.8〜19.4％ of SL; HL 21.4〜23.2; upper jaw length 16.8〜18.9; eye diameter 4.4〜5.3.
特 徴：
（属）：体には2列の発光器があり，各発光器は明瞭に離れている。峡部に発光器がある。脂鰭がある。囲眼部発光器は1個で，眼の前縁腹部と接している。前上顎骨歯は2列。鰓条発光器は9〜10個。体側発光器は16〜25個。尾部発光器は22〜25個。（種）：体側発光器は17〜18個で，その最終発光器は肛門の直上にある。腹鰭前発光器は21個。体長は頭長の4.3〜4.7倍，上顎長の5.3〜6.0倍。
分 布：
大西洋，インド洋，西部太平洋の暖海域。模式産地-アンダマン海。
備 考：
本種は大陸棚から陸棚斜面上部にかけて生息している。オーストラリアおよび日本から報告されているP. illustris McCullochは本種の劣級異名である（Witzell in Hureau and Monod ed., 1979）。（藤井）
Distinctive characters：
(Genus)：Two rows of photophores on body; each photophore distinctly separated. Photophores present on isthmus. Adipose fin present. A single ORB close to anteroventral margin of eye. Premaxillary teeth biserial. BR photophores 9〜10; OA 16〜25; AC 22〜25. (Species)：OA photophores 17〜18; the last one just above anus. IV photophores 21. Standard length 4.3 to 4.7 times of head length, or 5.3 to 6.0 times of upper jaw length.
Distribution：
Warm waters of Indian, the western Pacific, and Atlantic oceans. Type locality-Andaman Sea.
Remarks：
This species inhabits the continental shelf to the upper slope. P. illustris McCulloch recorded from Australia and Japan is a junior synonym of this species (Witzell in Hureau and Monod ed., 1979). (Fujii)
