特 徴：
（科）：体は細長く，側扁する。口は大きい（シンジュエソ属を除く）。鰓耙がある。顎に鬚がない。胸鰭は下位。列状発光器がある。（属）：体側発光器の上方に6〜7縦列，体側発光器と腹側発光器の間に1縦列の微小発光器がある。それらの中心列は側線上を走り，尾鰭まで達する。両顎歯は下顎先端を除き，1列。鰓条発光器は8〜16個。峡部に発光器がある。脂鰭はない。（種）：尾部発光器の最後の2個は合わさって群をつくらない。背鰭起部は吻端より尾鰭基底に近い。臀鰭は36〜41軟条*。鰓条発光器は8〜9個。腹部腹側発光器は13〜14個。尾部発光器は28〜29個。腹側発光器は72〜75個*。鰓耙数は12〜14*。
分 布：
東部南大西洋を除く，大西洋の暖海域。模式産地-マデイラ。
備 考：
本属には4種含まれる。本種の和名は体高が比較的高い特徴に由来する。*印はMukhacheva (1978) から引用。（藤井）
Distinctive characters：
(Family)：Body elongate and compressed. Mouth large, except genus Ichthyococcus. Gill rakers present. No barbel on chin. Pectoral fin low on body. Serial photophores present. (Genus)：Six or 7 longitudinal raws of minute photophores present above OA photophores and a single longitudinal row between OA and IC; a median raw of them along lateral line extending to caudal fin. Jaws teeth uniserial except for tip of lower jaw. BR 8〜16. Photophores present on isthmus. No adipose fin. (Species)：Last two AC not grouped together. Dorsal origin nearer to caudal base than to tip of snout. Anal fin rays 36〜41*. BR photophores 8〜9; VAV 13〜14; AC 28〜29; IC 72〜75*. Gill rakers 12〜14*.
Distribution：
Warm waters of Atlantic Ocean, except for eastern South Atlantic. Type locality-Madeira.
