本属魚類は大西洋から3種報告されている。H. gracilior, H. guppyiの前上顎骨歯叢は横幅が縦幅より大きく,鋤骨歯叢は縦幅が横幅より大きい(Smith and Kanazawa, 1977)。 (上野・佐々木)
Distinctive characters:
Mouth inferior. Anus situated forward of mid-body, total length 2.6〜2.8 times of preanal length. Number of preanal lateral line pores 33. Dorsal and anal fin rays segmented. Dorsal fin inserted over gill-opening. Labial flanges present on jaws; the upper very narrow. No postorbital porcs. A supratemporal pore on mid-line of back. Teeth conical, but the tips rather blunt; teeth on maxillary 5 rows anteriorly, 2 rows posteriorly; teeth on dentary 10 rows anteriorly and gradually tapering to 2 rows; premaxillary and vomerine tooth patches roundish, and as long as broad; premaxillary tooth patch wholly exposed when mouth closed.
Distribution:
Western Atlantic Ocean.
Remarks:
Three species are known from the Atlantic belonging to the genus Hildebrandia. H. gracilior and H. guppyi have premaxillary tooth patches broader than long, and vomerine tooth patches longer than wide (Smith and Kanazawa, 1977). (Uyeno and Sasaki)
