本属魚類は大西洋から4種類報告されている。A. balearicumは眼の後縁に沿い3個の感覚孔を備える。A. selenopsの鰓孔は両側鰓孔下端間の長さより遙かに大きい。A. analeの肛門は体中央に開く(Smith and Kanazawa, 1977)。 (上野・佐々木)
Distinctive characters:
Eye large. Anus located anterior to mid-body, total length 2.3〜2.5 times of preanal length. Number of preanal lateral line pores 53. Dorsal and anal fin rays unsegmented. Dorsal fin originates over gill-opening. Upper edge of gill-opening opposite middle of pectoral base. Interbranchial distance equals to gill-opening. Labial flanges well developed on jaws. Posterior nostril simple without flap. No postorbital pores. Teeth small and pointed; teeth on maxillary 3 rows; teeth on dentary 5 rows anteriorly, 2 rows posteriorly; teeth on premaxillary in a patch, largest number of teeth in a transverse row 12; vomerine tooth patch tear-drop shaped.

Remarks:
Four species of the genus are known from the Atlantic. A. balearicum with 3 postorbital pores; A. selenops with gill-opening distinctly larger than interbranchial distance; A. anale with anus situated just middle of body (Smith and Kanazawa, 1977). (Uyeno and Sasaki)
