Characteristic in having telson ornamented with about ten supplementary complete or broken carinae. Carapace widens posteriorly, with median, intermediate and lateral carinae, being armed with a small anterolateral spine. Rostral plate elongate and rounded distally. Dactylus of raptorial claw with six spines, outer margin being nearly straight. Lateral process of fifth thoracic somite slightly convex anteriorly and directed laterally; lateral processes of the sixth and seventh convex and directed posteriorly with acute apices. Abdomen with submedian, intermediate and lateral carinae; the submedian with a distal spine each at fifth and sixth somites, the intermediate at third to sixth somites and the lateral at first to sixth somites. Telson with three pairs of spines, with denticular formula 4-6, 8-10, 1.
Distribution:
Florida, the Gulf of Mexico, Cuba an Guianas, 35-70 m deep.
Remarks:
The Paciffic analogue, S. hancocki Schmitt, differs from this species in having definite prelateral lobes on the telson and a forward-curved spine on the lateral process of the fifth thoracic somite.
