Characteristic in color pattern. Carapace widens posteriorly, with a strong spine at its antero-external angle, which is directed obliquely forward; dorsal carinae and cervical groove distinct; median carina bifurcated at anterior one-fourth. Rostral plate more or less subquadrate, with a short median carina on its anterior half. Lateral process of fifth thoracic somite acute and curved forward; those of sixth and seventh somites triangular with acute apexes, directed obliquely backward, each bearing a low anterior tubercle. Carinae on abdominal somites strong; the submedian ends in a spine on fifth and sixth somites, the intermediate on fourth to sixth somites, and the lateral on first to fifth somites; marginal carina ends in a spine on first to fifth somites. Telson with six strong spines, with denticular formula 3-4, 6-9,1; prelateral lobe present. Raptorial dactylus with six spines, outer margin being sinuate.
Distribution:
Gulf of Mexico, Trinidad, Venezuela, Suriname and French Guiana, 0-150 m deep.
