Body elongate, cylindrical posterior part of caudal region slightly compressed, tapering; head about 7 times, body depth about 16 times in SL. Eye large, oval, its diameter about 3.8 times in head, its upper margin reaching dorsal profile of head. Snout round, short, nearly as long as eye. Interorbital region very narrow. Upper jaw more projected forward than lower jaw, posterior margin of upper jaw reaching anterior margin of pupil. Flat dermal fringes on posterior margin of upper jaw and ventral margin of lower jaw. Jaw teeth sharp, conical in two rows near symphysis and in a single row laterally. Several sharp conical teeth in a patch on vomer and uniserial on palatines. A nostril tube-like. Gill-opening extending to the same level as lower end of pectoral fin base, its upper margin with a large dermal lobe. Pseudobranchiae present. Pectoral fin round, short, its length about half of head. Pelvic fin small, situated slightly anterior to pectoral fin base. Dosal and anal fins low and long in base, base of former slightly longer than base of latter. Dorsal fin originating from above around tip of pectoral fin. Lateral line obsucure, running zigzag-fashion along ventral half of body. Small cycloid scales burried in skin, not imbricated. Head and pectoral fins naked. Buccal and branchial cavities blackish. Body brownish dorsally, paler ventrally with five triangular blotches on each side of body. Dorsal fin brownish and anal fin pale brown. Pectoral and pelvic fins yellowish white.
Distribution:
Continental slope of Argentine Patagonia.
Remarks:
Lycenchelys is represented by this species in Angentine Patagonia, and is known by L. antarcticus Regan in Chilean Patagonia.
