Head and trunk subcylidrical, tail fairly compressed, head about 6 times, body depth about 8.5 times in SL. Upper jaw, slightly longer than lower jaw, lips with many transverse vertical grooves. Month subterminal, small, with prebuccal dermal processes around, end of upper jaw not reaching to anterior margin of eye. A nostril tube-like, very long, reaching almost lower margin of upper lip when extended downward. Jaw teeth small conical, in 2 or 3 rows near symphysis and in a row laterally. About 10 small conical teeth on vomer. Several small conical teeth uniserial on palatines. Interorbital region narrow, its width about equal to eye diameter. Pectoral fin round, long, about 1.5 times in head. Pelvic fin small, situated extremely anterior to pectoral fin base. Dorsal fin slightly higher and longer in base than anal fin. Dorsal fin origin situated slightly posterior to pectoral fin origin. Lateral line running along median horizontal line of body. Fine cycloid scales burried in skin, not imbricated. Head, pectorals and belly naked. Gill-opening small, extending to level of anterior one-third of pectoral fin base. Body pale brownish dorsally and much paler ventrally. Ten dark brownish cross-bars across head, trunk and tail extending to dorsal and anal fins.
Distribution:
Eastern coast of southern South America.
Remarks:
This species is highly specialized in its feeding habits, all stomach analyzed containing practically only Polychaeta(Gosztonyi, 1977).
