Body elongate, extremely compressed with depressed head, head about 6.5-7.0 times, body depth 9-12 times in SL. Mouth subterminal, upper jaw slightly longer than lower jaw; posterior margin of upper jaw extending to anterior margin of eye. Lips delimited by dermal slit on both jaws. Interorbital region very narrow, its width less than eye diameter. Snout blunt, short, its length 4 times in head. Gill-opening extending downward to level of mid pectoral fin base. Free lobe of lower lips extended forward, almost to symphysis. Eye round, small, about 6 times in head. Teeth small conical in a single row on both jaws. About 3 small conical teeth in vomer. Several small conical teeth uniserial on palatines. Gill-rakers small nub-like. No pelvic fins. Pectoral fin situated low, round,short, about 2 times in head. Pseudobranchiae present. Dorsal fin originating just above gill-opening. Lateral line obscure, running along midline on trunk and anterior part of tail. Fine cycloid scales embedded in skin, not imbricated. Dorsal and anal fins also scaled on their basal parts. Head naked and lower part of abdomen sparsely scaled or naked. Body yellowish white with about 20 broad brownish cross bars extending to dorsal and anal fins. Irregular brown blotches on head.
Distribution:
Argentine Patagonia, mostly around Falkland Islands, Straits of Magellan and Chilean Patagonia.
Remarks:
Found in the intertidal zone and shallow waters off Tierra del Fuego and southern Patagonia (Gosztonyi, 1977). Up to 30 cm TL.
