Body oblong and slightly compressed. Ventral side of body from chin to anus covered with prickles, other parts of body naked. Caudal fin emarginate. Distance from tip of snout to dorsal origin less than 2 times distance from dorsal origin to base of caudal fin. Body grayish brown or greenish brown dorsally with 5〜6 transverse dark bands, ventral side white without dark areas; caudal fin dusky brown or greenish brown, tips of upper and lower lobes white; dorsal and pectoral fins dark, lower edge of pectoral fin black; anal fin white.
Distribution:
Both sides of the Atlantic, in the western Atlantic from New England to Argentina, sometimes found in brackish waters.
Remarks:
This species is distinguishable from L. lagocephalus by the following points:the dorsal fin situated anteriorly and no dark areas on the ventral side of the body. (Matsuura)
